Friendship square project

Our guild recently completed our Friendship Square project!

Inspired by ANWG’s theme of confluence, the members of the Lethbridge Handicraft Guild explored how data, weaving and other fibre arts can merge together to create unique and beautiful textiles. Our project is a confluence of the members of our guild and our community.

The warp of the friendship square project begins with the colours from the Lethbridge Tartan. In 1998, the Lethbridge Handicraft Guild designed and registered the official Lethbridge tartan. We used each colour in the tartan to represent a month of the year. We collected each guild’s birth month and used this data to assign the number of ends for the warp colours. The pattern we used is Canadian Snowflake.

Each member wove 10 squares in a weft colour and texture of their choice. One square was kept for the weaver, another square given for the guild’s group project and the final 8 were traded with other members.

Each member designed their own project with the 9 squares. Each project is individual to the artist and used a merging of textile techniques. This project is an exciting celebration of our friendship and guild as we moved towards on 70th guild anniversary this year.

One Warp/Two Scarves Workshop

We are proud to be offering a special weaving workshop- One Warp/Two Scarves with artist Anita Mayer!

Wednesday April 10th and Thursday April 11th, 9-4 each day
To register, or for questions, email lhguild@yahoo.com as spaces are limited!

Participants will weave two scarves one featuring free-form tapestry and the other fabric rya knots. Each scarf will be 8" wide and two yards long (a total warp of six yards so additional samples can be woven). Students need to arrive at class with a four harness loom warped
and ready for weaving (a limited number of looms may be available for rent from the guild, please contact us at lhguild@yahoo.com)

The first day will feature the tapestry scarf with bands of tapestry at each end with the middle section woven in plain weave and on the second day the focus will be on a rya knot scarf with panels of knots at each end of that scarf.

Full details will be provided students regarding yarns, materials, and warping instructions. A FOUR HARNESS FLOOR LOOM pre-warped loom is strongly recommended for this workshop to ensure that students complete the scarves. If a table loom is used, it is likely only one scarf will be completed although students could begin the second one and complete it at home. If time allows, extra warp at the end of the second scarf will be used for small samples of loops, raanau, and methods for blending colors.

A color lecture will be part of the course showing ways to successfully select and use colors in weaving.

COST
Members: $175
Non-members: $225

With over 50 years of creative experience, formal study, and extensive travel, Anita’s garments feature her signature color work and rich hand embroidery, beading, printing, and couched cord embellishments.  Anita believes there should be something magical and unique about what is worn each day and wants to share this concept with others.
Anita’s work has been included in national and international shows and she presents lectures and workshops throughout the United States and Canada.  She has published three books, three monographs, and is a frequent contributor to national magazines.
